Teacher: Good afternoon! I am glad to greet you at our party!

Our party is dedicated to music. Today we shall have a talk about preferences in music. We are going to listen to different kinds of music, your favorite songs and some facts from biography of great composers. We’ll try to find out what influence music has on people. I hope you will be able to discuss some questions and will take an active part in our party. Now let’s start with questions (на слайдах отражаются вопросы)

Teacher: What is music? Is it just a pleasant combination of sounds or a far more complicated notion?

Pupil 1: I think that music is a universal language understandable to everybody. People compose music in order to express their feelings and emotions. The composer speaks to us without using any words. Music can fill us with energy and make us happy.

Pupil 2: Music is one of the most popular human interests in the world. People listen to music to evoke emotions that they enjoy experiencing at the moment. Music exists in many forms and means different things to different people. Music is one of forms of art.

Pupil 3:  Personally, I can’t live without music. Music is a combination of many sounds. They are short and long, weak and strong. Music reflects people’s mood and emotions. Some of my classmates are interested in music very much. They attend music schools, play different musical instruments and learn to sing songs.

Teacher: Is music an important part of your life?

Pupil 4:  In my opinion, music plays an important role in our life. It reflects the world around us. Music can help to relax and to have a rest.  It provokes our deepest emotions and fills our hearts with kindness, joy and happiness.

Pupil 5:  There is hardly a person in the world who doesn’t like music. Most people can’t imagine their lives without it. It’s known that classical music makes us feel delighted and relaxed. And on the contrary, rock music and heavy metal arouse irritation, violence and rage. Some sounds even have a healing effect on people and can normalize heart rate.

Teacher: Is it difficult to live without music?

Pupil 6: I think it is difficult to live without music. We hear music everywhere: in the streets, at home, in the disco clubs, in the concert halls, over the radio, on TV, sometimes in the forest. We like to listen to music; we enjoy dancing to music.  Music is one of my favorite subjects at school.

Pupil 7: I am a fan of music. Personally, I think music serves not only for entertainment. The aim of music is to develop our taste and love for beauty. My life without music would be boring because music makes you feel good. I can’t imagine my world without music.

Teacher: Well, music is a part of our life. Music can leave us indifferent or it can provoke powerful and complex feelings. Music gives us aesthetic pleasure and has the power to unite people all over the world. What can we say about music?

Let us read a poem

Teacher: You can hear it here,

               You can hear it there,

                It’s sensational! It’s fearing!

                How exciting! How interesting!

Now listen to different kinds of music and try to describe it.

(Music)

How can you describe music? (Wonderful, tuneful, melodious, romantic, modern, slow, violent, lovely, energetic, fast, joyful, sad, pleasant, romantic, lyrical, rhythmic )

Who is the composer of this amazing music?

It’s time to listen to some facts from biography of great composers.

Pupil 8: Ludwig van Beethoven has been called the greatest composer who has ever lived. He was deaf for much of his life. He was born in Germany. At the age of 17 he went to Vienna to study under Mozart. The teacher and the student soon became friends.  By the age of 32, he knew he was going deaf. Deeply depressed, he had to give up playing, but was able to go on composing because he could still hear the sound of the music in his head. (Звучит музыка Бетховена)

Pupil 9:    Mozart was the greatest Austrian composer.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived only 35 years, but he became one of the world’s most famous composers. He began composing at the age of five. His father was a musician and he taught his son to play different instruments. From the age of six he toured Europe and gave concerts in Austria, Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland. He wrote symphonies and several great operas “The Marriage of Figaro” and “The Magic Flute” (звучит музыка Моцарта)

Pupil 10: Johann Sebastian Bach was a famous German composer. He was taught music by   his father, who was a professional musician, and then, when his father died, by his brother. He wrote a lot of church music. He led a life full of hardships. His name became famous only in the 19th century. (Звучит музыка Баха)

Pupil 11:Tchaikovsky Pyotr Ilyich , an outstanding Russian composer. He was fond of music since his early childhood.

His mother sang him beautiful songs and taught him to play the piano. He graduated from the Petersburg Conservatoire. He was the best pupil of Anton Rubinstein. When the Moscow Conservatoire was founded he became a professor there. Tchaikovsky created wonderful music: ten operas, three ballets, six symphonies and many other musical pieces. (Звучит музыка Чайковского)

Teacher: These compositions are very popular; they are played by the musicians of all countries and continents. I am fond of classical music and think that this kind of music will live forever. Well, what do know about music styles?

Pupil 12: There are various styles in music. They reflect the world that is constantly changing. Such styles as rap, hip-hop, jazz were created in the United States and then travelled to Europe. In the 1950s Elvis Presley became the king of rock’n’roll in the USA. This music was especially popular among the teenagers. Rock, hard rock, heavy metal and punk became popular in the 1970s and 1980s. Pop music became extremely fashionable in the 1990s. Teenagers enjoyed listening to Madonna, Michael Jackson, “Spice girls” The music of the 20th century did a lot to change the outlook of the people. It still plays a great role in the life of the people.  Young people in Russia prefer different styles of music: jazz, blues, country, rock and rock’n’roll.  As for me, I can listen to any kind of music. My tastes range from classical music to heavy metal.

Teacher: Let’s check yourself if you know music styles. (звучат разные стили музыки, учащиеся пытаются их угадать)

So, have you ever heard about the Beatles? Who will tell us about the Beatles?

Pupil 13: The four members of the group Paul Mc Cartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were born in Liverpool. They came from a working –class background and all had worked in various rock groups before they started performing together.  The name the “Beatles” was adopted in 1960.  Such songs as “Love me do”, “she loves you”, “Yesterday” made them popular all over the world.

(исполняется песня группы «Битлз»)

Teacher: Our time is over. Thank you for your work. I hope you enjoyed our party. Now let’s sing a song “We are the world” together.

(учащиеся исполняют хором песню на английском языке)
